字面上的意思是「在⋯⋯的影響下」，但究竟是什麼影響呢？其實完整用法是 “under the influence of alcohol”，只是日常中經常省略 alcohol，也可縮寫為 DUI（Driving under the influence），在影劇作品中也經常出現喔！

例句：He was arrested for driving under the influence.

他因酒後駕車被捕。

例句：There are serious consequences associated with driving under the influence.

酒後駕車會有嚴重的後果。

千萬不要以為 under the weather 是「在這樣的天氣之下」，而是指「某人身體不太舒服」的意思。

例句：It seems Peter is feeling under the weather. He might need a rest.

Peter 感覺今天身體不舒服。他可能需要休息一下。

under the circumstances / situations / conditions 在這樣的情況、條件下

例句：It is raining outside. To avoid player injuries, we must cancel and postpone the baseball game under the current circumstances.

外面正在下雨。為了避免球員受傷，在目前情況下，我們必須取消和推遲棒球比賽。

在中文中常見的「嚇死我了」，英文中也有類似的用法。

例句：The earthquake last night scared her to death.

昨晚的地震嚇壞她了。

例句：Jesse recently became a mother. Her kid can scare her to death with anything.

傑西最近成為母親，她的孩子做什麼都能把她嚇死。

scared 害怕的、畏懼的 (a.)

scared 當作形容詞有「害怕的、畏懼的」意思，其他同場加映的單字包含像是 frightened (害怕的)、 terrified (非常害怕的) 、fearful (恐懼的) 、cowardly (怯懦地) 都很適合用在類似的情境喔！

例句：They are frightened when they see the problem; instead, they wish to ignore it and do nothing, which is completely irresponsible.

他們在看到問題時感到害怕；相反地，他們希望無視問題，什麼都不做，這完全是不負責任的做法。

relate to sth 與…產生共鳴；理解

在歌詞中，Billie在副歌中反覆唱著這句話，代表著她和對方似乎一點都不對盤，在相處的過程也無法理解彼此。在這樣的情境下就可以使用 relate to sth/ someone的用法。

例句：I can relate to your problems. The same thing happened to me in high school.

我能理解你問題點，同樣的事情我高中時也發生過。

例句：He describes a culture that is so different from mine that it can be difficult for me to relate to it.

他描述的文化與我的文化如此不同，以至於我很難與之聯繫起來。

例句：Whenever Tim and his girlfriend are discussing political content, he finds it difficult to relate to her.

每當 Tim 和他的女朋友討論政治內容時，他發現很難與她產生共鳴。

當你無法理解某件事情時，口語也可以簡寫為 Can’t relate. 作為一種加強語氣。也是目前很常能在生活中聽到的用法喔！

例句：I don’t understand why she’s always in that situation. Can’t relate.

relate to 除了有「與…產生共鳴」，還有「把…聯想在一起」的意思，其他類似的用法也可以參考下方的說明，要特別注意介系詞的不同喔！

- 例句：Since turkey is always served during the Thanksgiving season, people tend to associate turkey with that holiday.
