subordinate 是由 sub ( 在下面 )、ord ( 次序 ) 與 ate ( 動詞字尾 ) 結合而來。結合後依照不同情景有不同的意思。在階級制度上，subordinate 會作為名詞，指「 下級、下屬 」。若作為形容詞來使用是形容一樣事物的重要性小於其他事物，是「 次要的、從屬的 」。作為動詞使用時是指「 將某事物置於次要地位、從屬於 」，使其變得比其他事物還不重要。

E.g. In order to advance her career, the employee was willing to subordinate herself to her boss and follow his instructions.

為了提升自己的事業，該員工願意讓自己從屬於老闆，聽從他的指示。
